relationships on the hill and more. good morning everyone. thanks for get ng an early start with us. i went to a state school. average student. solid. >> it's thursday, october 26, 5:00 a.m. in the east, 10:00 a.m. in niger. the closest connection yet between the trump campaign and wikileaks prompting many new questions this morning. daily beast first to report that the head of a data analytics company which worked for the trump campaign e-mailed wikileaks founder julian assange. >> sources tell them that the ceo was seeking tens of thousands of e-mails of hillary clinton deleted from her private server. let's turn to pamela brown. >>reporter: good morning. sources tell cnn the head of cambridge analytica, a data firm working for the trump campaign reached out to julian assange

during the campaign asking about hillary clinton's missing e-mails. julian assange acknowledged on twitter that did happen and says he roo rejected the request. the head of the firm sent an e-mail to several people including rebecca mercer saying he had e-mailed assange but sources say no one from the trump campaign was on the e-mail chain. wikileaks was responsible for releasing hacked e-mails from the dnc last year. not hillary clinton's e-mails. we don't know if a third party ever obtained them. but wikileaks was directly connected to russia by the intelligence community. these new revelation establish the the closest known link between the trump campaign and wikileaks. we should know the daily beast was first to report the e-mail outrage. >> okay. thanks very much. after the daily beast published its story, the trump campaign responded in a

trump. certainly he speaks off-the-cuff quite a bit. and in fact he's holding these impromptu press conferences quite a bit more than he did in the early days. so the american public certainly has had plenty of opportunities to hear donald trump on donald trump. i don't think that the old pref if a sorial complaints about some politicians in the past that they're too professor like, i don't think that's one made against this professor. also, at the same time the american people clearly respond to the way he uses language, make america great again, quit catchy, they take over the way the american public speaks, and that's something when you're talking about politicians and campaigning. so, we hear donald trump explain himself, and the american public gets to make their own conclusions on that. >> but you make a great point, his lack of civility is actually something the voters -- or at least his spoupporters seem to

perilous territory for the president at this point. in this case, you sort of have to separate the campaigning and politicking aspect of things versus the policy making, because donald trump is right that republicans will still probably vote for his agenda and for the republican agenda in eunice son. the vast majority of the time because the truth is even if they disagree with the substance of donald trump and his style, they all want the same thing. it's certainly weakens the white house's hand in shaping those deals, but the senators aren't going to vote against something that they actually want to pass. however, in the campaigning and politicking aspects, this is absolutely a fissu are in the party. and that can have long-term damaging affects on the party in

out. >> reporter: that's right. there are some 800 american troops here in niger. that sounds like a lot. even some lawmakers in congress questioned whether they knew about it. frankly, coming into this country you can see how vast and undergoverned these areas are. 800 is really assisting a government and region that is dealing with a threat that is surrounding areas of -- the continental united states. it is a big theater and it is an important mission. u.s. officials saying that the key here is that they're trying to stamp out the terror threat from particularly the neighboring countries to niger bleeding over the border and they're trying to do it before it gets too severe that it could threaten american interests and in fact the homeland. now, the ambush that happened happened just a few hours from where i'm standing now. one key detail coming out is that u.s. officials say that the military here has been asking

tried to meddle in our election last year. that's where this investigation always comes back to is trying to figure out what they did, how they did it, and whether it could happen again. if it does, how we protect ourselves from having our election influenced by a foreign power. so sometimes we do lose site of that sort of overarching theme a little bit about all the drip, drip, drip of very interesting developments and at some point voters will be able to draw conclusions. it can be overwhelming at times, but certainly the fact that a foreign power engaged in these activities should be something the american public pays attention to. >> all right the american public can also decide whether the media or the president makes him appear as uncivil. here's what the president said about that in an interesting news conference just next to ro marine one and context on that.

is that civility and are we making him appear that way? >> the american public has heard donald trump in his own words quite a bit, and he -- is known for his free wheeling off-the-cuff style. it's what got him through the campaign and he still loves to do it at rallies. certainly, the american public can draw some conclusions from what they have seen with their own eyes and heard. it's amazing sometimes the media criticism. it just goes such both ways at the same time where they say there's too much donald trump in his own words you take his wrords out of context. all that noise to a certain extent, for the most part, what the american public is seeing is what donald trump says, and he can try to spin it, but it's absolutely the material is there for them to draw their own conclusions. >> in this sort of buffet of topics that the president addressed, he also talked about the unity in the republican party. he said there is great unity in

the republican party. that's as his former chief strategist steve bannon has declared war on establishment republicans. the president blaming congress for not pushing his agenda through as well as obviously attacking individual leaders of congress. is there unity in the republican party? >> it's a very complicated question. i think there's unity on some things and not others. there's certainly unity of purpose in the sense the republican party has an agenda that they are trying to accomplish. now there's some differences over what those details should look like, and as we saw with the failure of repealing and replacing obamacare, that just because there's agreement on an overall goal doesn't mean they can get together on the details, and so when you throw into that the fact that the republican primaries have been brutal for years, and now you have this increasingly personal bitter

fight between steve bannon and his aligned political operations and mitch mcconnell and his aligned political operations, some of these primaries could get potentially very nasty and very politically dangerous for some of these politicians so those fissures absolutely have the potential to erupt. but at the end of the day republicans are trying to do the same thing. even when you have senators who have spoken out against trump as individuals, that doesn't mean they're going to automatically tank bills they actually want to see get done. it simply weakens the white house's hand a little bit in shaping those bills. >> but at the heart of all this, this is his party now. not steve bannon's party. people are elevating him to a stature he does not deserve. donald trump is more popular in these districts than all these candidates. but doesn't the president

himself need to come out and squash this civil wa are if hr?s >> that's up to donald trump. he certainly for a long time felt steve bannon channelled what he wanted to accomplish. but at the same time, he's criticized mitch mcconnell and also stood with him and endorsed his chosen candidate in alabama who eventually lost. so donald trump still hasn't figured out i think how to thread the needle when it comes to this sort of pitfalls on both sides kind of issue. in fact, i think a lot of presidents in his shoes would do their best to stay out of it as much as they could because once you start picking a id soo, you risk perhaps losing in a primary or getting an enemy elected to the senate. and so those are very dangerous calculations that he is still

trying to figure out how he wants to proceed. >> that alabama primary really stuck with the president. >> one of the smartest people i know indeed. >> thank you. >> i agree with that. thanks so much. the bipartisan bill to stabilize obamacare would cut the deficit. that's according to a new report. the deal reduces the deficit by $3.8 billion over the next decade and wouldn't change the number of insured americans. the bipartisan bill is offered on two senators. democrats patty murray and republican lamar alexander. it allows states more say in how they carry out obamacare. the insurers rely on those payments to help pay for nearly 6 million low income americans. trump stopped them earlier this month calling them a bailout for insurers. but alexander and murray say

hard to speculate after the fact. i think it's one thing worth mentioning is that those french fighter jets that were scrambled to the scene of this deadly ambush weren't able to engage with the enemy because they say it wasn't clear whether they would have a friendly fire incident given the proximity and chaos of that particular fire fight. we don't know. but certainly, it is true, as you say, u.s. officials saying for some time here in niger they've been trying to get authorization to arm the drones to have drones here and other assets in country to help this mission. which is a mission covering a vast area. i must say just coming into this country and looking at the terrain as i have before when coming here, you really see how rural, how desperate these areas are. and the lack of government in these border areas between the countries is really where the terror groups operate. we also learning more details of that high-level target that they

were trying to gather intelligence on. this individual is known to authorities to be suspected in a number of attacks, particularly in neighboring area here. it really points to the seriousness of the terror threat. these are relatively small groups but they have this capacity to strike at soft targets and at u.s. interests in the region. that's why u.s. officials say ey reall have to push to stamp out the threat at this stage and not when it gets out of control. >> okay. important context. all right. time for a look at what's coming up on "new day." >> that is a good looking anchor team there. facts first. facts first. good looking. >> apple, banana. >> so look, there is so much going on in the news.

and it's really not a hashtag or just a motto. we have to take a look and figure out what the facts are about all of these new allegations going on. where money went during the campaign, what it was using to fund, what the connection might have been to russian efforts to medsle in the election. here's a premise you have to keep in mind. this happens in elections in almost every campaign that i've ever been around. i'm not talking about working with russia. i'm talking about paying for information about your opponents. paying for analytical data that is often scrutinizing of who you want to vote. but really, going after your opponent and looking for negative things. this is a part of politics and political culture. good, bad, right, wrong, maybe not a discussion for right now. what is the factual basis for these allegations about the analytics company that the trump
